Multimedia lighting for High-Tech scientists

A new building for the faculty of Electronics and Computer and Information Sciences (FERI) was recently completed. The building is an extension of the faculty’s existing rooms. Prior to the handover, FERI, part of the University of Maribor, was operating in four different locations. The new building now allows all 266 employees and 3,000 students to work and attend their lectures on one spot.

The new object consists of three buildings. The first four-storey building that contains laboratories and classrooms is situated in Prežihova street. The second building looks onto the yard; it has five storeys and a mid-storey in which cabinets are situated. The two-storey transversal building contains four lecture rooms with additional halls. The three buildings together form the central atrium that also acts as the central source of light for interior lighting.
Each of the three main sets that form the new FERI building demanded special consideration as to how daylight and artificial luminaires inside the building should supplement one another, and how this lighting should upgrade or liven-up modern architecture.

Furthermore, the architects had to make it as functional and user-friendly as possible. Regarding the central atrium, the building’s so-called living room, we realised that high levels of daylight are essential for the well-being of people. Therefore, artificial lighting in rooms opening towards the atrium remains very unobtrusive, hidden below the metal ceiling. Light lines or features are projected in the eyes of an observer only in the two halls in front of the lecture rooms containing multimedia equipment. They enable video-conferences or lecture-transfers from other faculties, simultaneous interpretations for 150 individuals, as well as classical presentations.

Therefore, lighting is optimally incorporated into the multimedia design of the space. Luminaires that were chosen through the DALI protocol create light shadows that illuminate an individual room in accordance with professor-student communication (video-conference, computer projections and classical lectures). The architect put the same care to attention that he placed on incorporating lighting into the multimedia design onto an integration of lighting into the spacial architecture. Comfolight luminaires are arranged in uninterrupted continuous rows that enclose ceiling cascades made of metal nets, while direct lighting emphasises the high quality of materials used for the project.

Tables in the new building are equipped with computers with monitors and connections to various computer networks and internet. The tables are no longer arranged in a classical way; rather, they are flexible and allow for alterations when necessary. As such, we had to limit light glare on monitors that are mounted in all possible positions with suitable lighting, and ensure optimal illumination of working areas. We used Quadrature luminaires, as the innovative technology of Eldacon microprismatic panels fulfils the above-mentioned criteria; moreover, their shape complements the contemporary appearance of the space.

Lighting of the entire new extension of FERI was a special multidisciplinary task, the architect’s awareness of the importance of lighting is revealed in moments when co-operation is required with a lighting engineer, the so-called lighting designer, and an electrical-installer. The sooner this happens, the better arte the options for a successful outcome of the project. However, good teamwork is required in the realisation phase (architecture, installation, lighting) for a promising project to turn into a well-illuminated object like FERI.
