Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna Made Fit For The European Championships.
The Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna is one of the locations for the European Football Championships taking place in Austria and Switzerland in 2008. Eighteen million euros will be invested in the stadium up to the time of the championships. Floodlighting and lighting for the tribunes will be modernised by Siteco.
The Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna is the largest of Austria’s football stadiums. Reconstruction commenced in the autumn of last year. As required by UEFA stipulations, the stadium will be made fit for the European Championships and three additional rows of seating will be installed in order to satisfy the requirements for 50,000 seats. After the football event, the additional seating will be removed again as the stadium needs a running track for athletics. As part of the reconstruction, the stadium had a grass heating system installed in summer 2005, and will also have an underground station in time for the championships in 2008. The lighting installation will be renewed for the championships.
Siteco is responsible for the floodlighting as well as the tribune lighting. It was necessary to bear in mind the lighting requirements when using the stadium as a facility for both football and athletics, and ensuring that the relevant standards for floodlighting with Em>1400 Lux were maintained.
Lighting consists mainly of A2 Maxi floodlights (132 pieces) with 2000W, supplemented with R2 Maxi projectors (140 pieces), also with 2000W. These have been installed alternately in six sectors on the roofing construction. The A2 Maxi floodlights emit a glare-free and uniform light onto the playing field while some of the R2 Maxi projectors will be used for the illumination of athletics events. 112 pieces alike of the A2 Mini (150W) and Midi (250W) floodlights illuminate the tribunes.
An interesting aspect is the use of instant hot re-ignition for all floodlights. With special instant hot re-ignition gear it is possible to reignite high pressure lamps within 0.2 seconds after a mains power failure or transient system fault. The normal cooling procedure necessary before ignition can take place is not necessary. Luminaires with instant hot re-ignition are essential in situations requiring a disturbance-free lighting, for example in critical traffic situations or stadiums with live TV coverage. The reconstruction of the stadium has created a completely down-to-earth but carefully thought-out high-tech solution that can be evaluated not just as a technical construction but as a cultural contribution and an examplary piece of architecture. The lighting from Siteco contributes to this success.
After the death of Ernst Happel in 1992, the Prater Stadium was renamed to adopt the name of the legendary player and trainer. On the 8th June 2008 the first European Championships match will take place in the stadium, and a total of seven matches including the final will be hosted there.
