The outdoor LED luminaire DL® 20 LED from Siteco has been awarded the iF product design award 2011. The highly respected design competition's jury highlighted the unique design of the luminaire and also the high quality of its technical implementation.
'Logic, morale and magic' are the trilogy of words used by the Stuttgart offices of Phoenix Design to summarise their approach to design, and during the design process for Siteco's DL® 20 LED, Phoenix managed to consistently implement this credo. The functionality convinces, material and technology are both user-friendly and kind to the environment, and the form has an appeal all of its own.
A traditional form, newly interpreted
The contours of the DL® 20 LED are defined by two bracket arms that emanate from the mast as branches from a tree trunk, supporting the ring-shaped luminaire head as a crown. The design gives the impression of being both organic and technical, a hybrid style that ensures the luminaire is able to blend harmoniously into diverse surroundings, whether modern building constructions of glass and steel or park landscapes.
The luminaire also masters another characteristic facet with ease, uniting classicism with technical quality: on the one hand the conical silhouette quotes the typical lantern shape and on the other, thanks to state-of-the-art LED technology the luminaire interprets this in a new and surprising way. The result of this successful design is an outdoor luminaire that impresses during the daytime with a minimal language of form and a filigree impression, and during the hours of darkness has a particularly pleasing appearance with the discreet, illuminating corona of the LED ring.
Tailor-made lighting technology
The photometric parameters of the DL® 20 LED are defined by high-grade, high power LEDs and a precisely matched optical concept. Each individual LED has its own micro-LED reflector of aluminized plastic, and the light emitted is guided via a global luminaire reflector of aluminium in MIRO® quality onto the road and path surfaces. This highly innovative optical system ensures homogeneous light distribution coupled with very good luminous efficacy. At the same time loss via stray light is avoided, meaning that the night sky remains free of unnecessary light immissions and the biosphere of nocturnally active insects and birds is affected as little as possible. The light passes through a cover panel of white glass with an especially high transmission factor, and this innovative interplay between high power LEDs and optical system means glare-free visual comfort.
In order to make possible standard-compliant lighting of a uniform character according to individual application needs for through roads, ancillary roads, residential areas and parks, three light distribution characteristics are available: wide asymmetric, extremely wide asymmetric and symmetric. The choice of two colour temperatures, warm white and neutral white, offers even more design flexibility. And the selection process for LEDs guarantees both a high convergence between the individual LEDs or highly precise binning and in addition a high colour constancy over the service life and with dimming.
Modular design and simple installation
A modular principle determines the construction of the DL® 20 LED. The individual components of ring, arms and mast are installed with ease; mast mounting needs only two screws and the electrical connection of ring and arm is implemented with the intelligent plug connection.
Accommodation of the control unit in the mast mounting element and the function of the luminaire housing as a heat sink ensure effective thermal management. This is the basis for gentle LED operation and enables a service life of over 50,000 hours for both the LEDs and control unit. As standard, the electronic control units have integrated flexible luminous flux configuration, power reduction, time-dependent luminous flux control and constant luminous flux control.
Controlling according to needs instead of switching off
The application of LED technology in outdoor lighting in itself achieves significant energy savings with operating costs. With distinctly lower connected loads, LEDs emit identical or superior illumination, and with their long service life, regular relamping is no longer required and costs for maintenance are slashed. The already low energy consumption levels can be further reduced if the LED luminaires are combined with intelligent control technology.
For the DL® 20 LED, Siteco offers a choice of two control concepts as standard: with the Plus performance package, the control units of each individual luminaire are programmed with the Siteco® Servicebox; the user connects the Servicebox with the Y-cable via the plug-in coupling and can then specify lighting level, switching time and reduction level. The Premium performance package enables control and monitoring of each individual light point of a lighting installation from a central control centre, and a supplementary control wire need not be routed for this purpose. Data transmission is over the existing power network via LON protocol. The Premium functional package is implemented via an addition controller accommodated in the luminaire mast. |
